My Needlepoint Story

It was around this time two years ago that I purchased my very first needlepoint project. While others were scouring the internet for Black Friday deals on gadgets and gizmos, I was deep-diving into a needlepoint website, searching for the perfect beginner-friendly project to kick off my journey.

As the owner of a small craft business, I neither had the time nor the space to add yet another hobby to my collection. Yet, there was something about the charm of needlepoint stockings, belts, and key fobs that always captured my attention. They seemed timeless, personal and classic.

So, I took the plunge. I ordered a fully kitted ornament with a stitch guide, determined to set myself up for success. I tucked it away until the New Year, promising myself that once the holiday rush slowed down and my business responsibilities eased, I’d finally allow myself to dive into the newness of needlepoint.

Fast forward nearly two years, and my needlepoint obsession has only grown. To date, I’ve completed three Christmas stockings, two pillows, one purse clutch, an eyeglass case, a key fob, and countless ornaments, to name a few. I’ve ventured into painting my own canvases—some for my personal stash and others to share with fellow stitchers through my website. {Shameless self-promotion - you can shop my collection of canvas designs and hand-made project bags here!} And while I dabble in self-finishing for myself, I have major respect for the professionals who turn our canvases into beautiful creations!

These days, my thread stash is out of control, I own stretcher bars in every size, and my boys joke about finding stray needles in the most unexpected places. I’m never without a small “purse project” tucked in my bag, ready for waiting rooms, carpool lines, or any moment that allows me to sneak in a few stitches. I've even picked up a social media ghost-writing gig for a local needlepoint shop in Chapel Hill, NC which has taught me so much about the art and deepened my love for the craft and the community!

For me, needlepoint is both relaxing and rewarding. It transforms idle time into something productive and beautiful. Where I once dreaded the monotony of waiting, I now savor those moments as opportunities to create.

The best part of this journey has been connecting with the ever-growing needlepoint community—a group as passionate and welcoming as the craft itself. I’ve learned so much from their shared wisdom and creativity, and I know there’s still so much more to discover.

If you're a fellow needlepointer, say hello in the comments and tell me where you're stitching from!
